The films that we grow up and know with are what we called commercial films. These films have big budget, famous celebrities acting on it, but with sometimes predictable and formulaic themes. Besides these well know form of entertainment, another form of film has emerged which is now taking various entertainment industries by storm. they are called independent films or simply "indie" films.

There are obvious differences between the independent films from its more popular commercial counterpart. Number one is budget which makes is the reason why the overall effect and cinematics of the film looks amateurish. Only little new about indie films back in the days. These kind of film that seemingly didn't get any attention at first has now been recognized by international award giving bodies and is now even mimicked by big film studious that used to create commercial films.

Most independent film has themes and scenarios taken from real life. Either that or they have social, political and mostly controversial themes not seem or sometimes avoided by commercial films. Thus directors, writers and actors are often praised for their artistry in expressing the reality in the presentation of the film. Not that commercial film actors and production team are inferior compare to that of the indies, but the board of censors and the demand of public is what restrict them to exercise their creativity in tackling such seemingly bizarre topics. Also, many mainstream actors have also found work in independent film and this is where their talent shines brightest with more challenging acting and engaging plot about the real lives of real people and not some gun blazing action flicks or predictable rich guy meets girl love stories.

The only problem with indie film is the lack of budget which means the lack of promotional machinery. Unlike mainstream film that has various publishers and advertisers to cover for them, indie film doesn't usually have any of them. Thus, they often would get amateur actors to play in their film which is either a hit or a miss on the film. Sometimes the indie film's success may very well depend on the director, if he is well known and won various awards which also goes for the actors playing in the film. It is also a big help for an indie to have popular mainstream actors usually offering their expertise at a discounted and sometimes free of charge to act in one. They are the promotional machinery themselves, thanks to their star power or influence.

Movie goers must have an open mind and do not misjudge indie films. Such films are as competitive as the mainstream one, and usually way better when it comes to story, concept, acting, cinematography, and direction.
